What Are You Spreading? Introducing the CARE to Lead™ Framework for Credit Union Leaders

Leadership can be….HARD.

Credit union leaders are balancing member needs, employee engagement, operational pressures, changing technology, and a workplace that often feels like it's moving at the speed of light. Some days you're discussing strategic priorities. Other days you're helping someone work through things show up small but take up big space.

Through all of it, one truth remains:

Leadership is contagious.

Whether we realize it or not, we're constantly spreading something. Confidence or uncertainty. Connection or disconnection. Accountability or avoidance. Energy or exhaustion.

The question isn't if we're influencing the people around us.

The question is: What are we spreading?

That's why I developed the CARE to Lead™ Framework. It is a practical leadership toolkit designed to help leaders create stronger teams, healthier cultures, and better workplace experiences.

No fluff. No 187-page manual you'll never read again. Just practical tools that make leadership feel a little lighter and a whole lot more intentional.

C is for Connection

People want to feel heard, valued, and understood. Connection isn't a soft skill. It's a strategic advantage. It fuels trust, improves communication, and creates the psychological safety that allows people to contribute their best thinking.

Tool: Ask one simple question:

"How can I make your busy better?"

It's amazing what happens when someone realizes you're genuinely interested in making their day a little easier instead of simply adding another item to it.

A is for Accountability

Most leaders don't struggle with accountability.

They struggle with avoidance.

The difficult conversation gets delayed.
The performance issue gets ignored.
The expectations stay fuzzy.

We've all done it. We convince ourselves we're "being nice" when really we're just borrowing tomorrow's problem and charging ourselves interest.

The problem? Avoidance is contagious too.

Tool: Identify one conversation you've been postponing and schedule it this week. Not next month. Not after the next project. This week.

Future You will be grateful.

R is for Recognition

Recognition is the leadership act of making value visible.
The strongest contributors often don't ask for recognition, but they absolutely feel the absence of it.

What leaders consistently notice shapes culture.

And contrary to popular belief, recognition doesn't require balloons, cupcakes, or an Employee of the Month parking spot.

Tool: Share one specific thank-you today.

Not:

"Great job."

Try:

"I noticed how you handled that member conversation. Your patience and professionalism made a real difference."

Specific recognition sticks. Think about how you feel when you receive it….even if it is rare.

E is for Energy

Energy isn't about being the loudest person in the room.

(As an 18-year radio broadcaster veteran, trust me...volume and impact are not the same thing.)

Energy is about what people consistently experience around you.

Do they leave conversations feeling steadier?
More confident?
More supported?

Or more overwhelmed?

Leaders don't just influence culture through decisions.
They influence it through presence.

Tool: Before your next meeting, take ten seconds and ask yourself:

"What energy am I bringing into this room?"

Ten seconds = Big ripple effect.

Small Shifts. Big Impact.

The goal of CARE to Lead™ isn't perfection.

It's intention.

I've never met a leader who woke up in the morning hoping to create confusion, lower morale, or make someone's day harder. But under pressure, we all become contagious an the most effective leaders aren't superheroes. They're simply more aware of what they're spreading and more intentional about the impact they want to create.

Credit unions have always been rooted in people helping people.

Leadership works the same way.

One conversation.
One recognition.
One courageous discussion.
One intentional moment at a time.

Leadership is contagious.

So...

What are you spreading?
